Frequently Asked Questions:
October 17th School Board Election
Why am I only voting for one School Board Trustee?
Last year, SD61 leadership decided to move to a ward model for School Board elections.
In this model, each ward of SD61 gets a designated number of seats on the board.
The SD61 board is divided into seven trustee electoral areas, with five of the areas being represented by one trustee. Victoria and Saanich will be represented by two trustees each.
Oak Bay gets 1 seat on the school board. If you live in Oak Bay and are registered to vote, you will see one School Board Trustee race on your ballot.
Andrea Mears is running for the Oak Bay ward seat.
I don't have kids in SD61 schools.
Can I still vote?
Yes!
In the same way that we elect representatives even if we don’t use all of the services they vote on, we should all vote in our school board elections.
School boards do a lot - especially when it comes to budgeting, policy, and good governance. We owe it to our community to ensure that our public schools in SD61 are well-run and support all students.
What does it mean to be endorsed by the Victoria Labour Council and the Greater Victoria Teachers Association?
An endorsement tells people something about the values organizations see in a candidate. It doesn't give anyone control over how I vote.
My responsibility as a trustee would be to students and to the school district as a whole.
In fact, I think my labour relations experience is useful. I understand collective agreements, workplace relationships and how disagreements can escalate when communication breaks down. I also understand that good labour relations don't mean one side always gets what it wants. They depend on clear roles, respectful relationships and finding workable solutions.
I was endorsed by the Teachers. They told me that they interviewed the three people running for school board in Oak Bay and they chose to endorse me after the interviews. Their endorsement advised that they were recommending candidates who stand for things like addressing violence in classrooms, supporting climate initiatives, making sure students have the support they need in the classroom and that schools are safe spaces for learners.
If an issue ever created an actual conflict of interest for me, I would follow the appropriate rules and disclose it.
Okay.
